Putters generally fall into two shapes. Blades are slim and traditional, usually suiting golfers with an arcing stroke — where the putter head naturally opens and closes slightly as it swings, like a pendulum on a curved path. Mallets are larger, rounder heads with more weight around the edges, usually suiting golfers with a straight-back-and-through stroke, where the face stays square throughout. Whether a putter is "toe-hang" or "face-balanced" describes how it sits when you balance the shaft on your finger — toe-hang putters droop toward the toe (better for an arcing stroke), while face-balanced putters sit flat (better for a straight stroke).
